Rotterdam, not just a port
Rotterdam is Europe’s biggest port and one of the largest maritime hub centres in the world. Numerous shipbuilders, shipping companies, ports and marine service and equipment suppliers, as well as maritime training and research centres, are located within a 200 km radius of the city. The port handles around 465 million tonnes of cargo a year, carried by over 30,000 ocean-going ships and 110,000 inland vessels. Rotterdam’s port complex generates employment for around 90,000 people and has an estimated economic added value of €13 billion a year.
Blessed with striking, futuristic architecture, good public transport connections, plenty of fine restaurants and bars and a dynamic night-time economy, Rotterdam is rightly considered to be one of Europe’s most exhilarating and vibrant cities right now. The Netherlands' second-largest metropolis is a diverse community, with almost 48% of its inhabitants non-Dutch. It has an international reputation as a centre for arts and culture, as well as for maritime affairs, and there are a host of top-class museums to visit. Make sure you book a long enough stay to enjoy all that Rotterdam has to offer.
