Digitalisation; Big Data; Smart Ships; Autonomous Ships: the buzzwords on the lips of the maritime industry in 2017 can pave the way to real efficiency gains. Industry inhabitants seeking a route of transition to the smarter ship nonetheless need an opportunity to take stock, to sift the advanced digital catchword from the obtainable reality.
As the Europort exhibition in Rotterdam opens its doors to the tide of international maritime visitors for the 35th time this year in November, 'big data’ is understandably one of the event’s central themes.
For Dutch communication and navigation electronics innovator Alphatron Marine, the unique significance of Europort in its annual calendar is that it brings the entire spectrum of maritime sectors under one roof, according to CEO Luuk Vroombout. "Europort is like no other global exhibition covering all aspects of the marine industry,” he says. This includes deep sea, short sea, fishing, dredging, offshore wind and inland shipping.
In fact, the exhibition halls will be awash with software and hardware solutions to enable data exploitation and its uses to enhance vessel performance. Visitors are unlikely to be disappointed, whether they are seeking new generation IT and system integration tools, ultra-sensitive monitoring, condition-based maintenance solutions, fleet performance management or analysis software, to name a few.
Vroombout says it is up to individual exhibitors to make their presence felt. For Alphatron, this shouldn’t be an issue. The company will showcase its collaboration with JRC, established in 2014 to bring together expertise in communications, navigation, automation and integrated bridge technology, and its recent strategic partnership with Transas on R&D and next-generation hardware and software. Alphatron says joining forces with other companies strengthens its offering to the market and is vital to enable the industry’s transition to smart, semi-autonomous vessels.
The Europort 2017 exhibition will be held between 7 - 10 November 2017.
